There is no central authority which issues filming permits at the national level in the Czech Republic. Film permits are issued by municipal authorities and other local administrative bodies. Fees, deadlines and other requirements vary, depending on the location. Filmmakers shooting on private property must also deal directly with the property owners.

WHEN TO SHOOT?

Czech has a four-season climate with hot summers, colorful leaves in fall, white winters, and spring in full bloom. May to October are the best months to film for warm weather looks. November to April has snow on the mountains. For monthly weather statistics please see here.

COSTS.

Although Czech is one of the more expensive former Eastern Bloc countries, the high standard of services makes it very good value for money, and a cost competitive alternative to Western Europe. Our Czech fixer / service producer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.

TALENT IS NON-UNION.

Day rates and buyouts are negotiable. Most local talent looks are central European of a Slavic background. Czech does not have a large pool of multicultural talent as you might find in the US or UK, but there are enough to fill extra roles. In any case, Prague’s close proximity to other major European production centers allows easy access to those pools of talent should you ever need to look further.

FRINGES.

Crew members are independent contractors. As far as crew fringes are concerned there is no workers compensation or payroll tax.

PREMIUMS.

Czech works on a 12 hour shoot day with 1 hour for lunch. Meal penalties apply. The working week is 6 days with shooting on the 7th day incurring double time fees. Turnaround is 10 hours between shifts. No premiums for weekends or public holidays.

CZECH FILM EQUIPMENT

Equipment. Czech has a deep range of standard and specialized camera, lighting and grip equipment with companies such as Arri, Vantage, Panther, Panavision and Panalux all present. Some specialized gyro heads and camera cars need to be brought in.

For productions looking to bring in film equipment Czech is an ATA carnet country.

POST PRODUCTION.

Czech offers a variety of high standard post facilities including VFX, animation, editing, and film labs. Post companies of note include UPP.

Prague

Prague is a very popular film destination both for its state of the art studio infrastructure as well as its wealth of magnificent Gothic, baroque, art nouveau, cubist and contemporary architecture. Locations of particular interest include Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Wenceslas Square, Church of Our Lady before Týn, Strahov Monastery Library, Clementinum Library, Municipal House, Powder Tower, Loreto Church, National Museum, National Theatre, State Opera buildings, Frank Gehry’s Dancing House, Žižkov Tower, and Cross Club steampunk building, to name a few. Prague is the capital and main production centre where most crew and equipment are based.

Prague is the top film and tourist destination in the Czech Republic. The capital city is divided into numbered administrative districts, with Prague 1, Prague 2 and Prague 3 being the most central. You will need a permit from each district in which you plan to shoot.

The historical center of the city, located in Prague 1, is the area most visited by filmmakers and by tourists. To shoot in Prague 1, you must submit the application in Czech, via mail or in person at the town hall of the Prague 1 district. The application must include, among others, a map of the filming location.

Most productions will also need a permit from Prague’s road and street authority, Technická správa komunikací (TSK). Some locations in Prague — such as Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square and all parks in the city — are subject to special conditions and fees.

Filming with drone

Commercial operation of an unmanned aircraft (drone) is regulated; the owner of the drone needs permission from the Civil Aviation Authority. Filming with a drone not registered in the Czech Republic is possible, but it is quite a time-consuming process, lasting many months. Foreign filmmakers are therefore recommended to use already registered Czech operators. There are many established companies in the Czech Republic that specialize in shooting footage using drones and which have experience on small and large international productions alike.

It is necessary to take into account several basic restrictions when shooting with drones, among them that they can be flown at a maximum height of 300 meters above ground and that they are banned from flying over people and private properties without first obtaining consent. Drones cannot be operated in the vicinity of airports or busy traffic junctions.

To fly over densely populated areas (towns and villages) the drone operator must receive special authorization from the Civil Aviation Authority. Proceedings for drone operators who are already registered take up to 30 days, but usually less than 10, and the condition is the consent of landowners to the take-off, overflight and landing of the drone on their property, as well as the consent of those it will fly over and all other persons concerned. It is also necessary to prevent access to others to the area where the unmanned aircraft is operating.
