What is Flattening of Affect in Film?

Flattening of Affect in Film

Technology, violence, drugs, and the media lead to detached, emotionless, unauthentic lives are symptomatic of the flattening affect in film. Postmodernist film classification for works that articulate the themes and ideas of postmodernism through the medium of cinema. Postmodernist film attempts to subvert the mainstream conventions of narrative structure and characterization, and tests the audience's suspension of disbelief.

"Flattening of affect" refers to a constricted or completely blunted emotional response to a situation that would otherwise illicit a strong emotional response. Psychologists typically use this term in reference to the schizophrenic mind's tendency to display inappropriate emotional reactions to various stimuli, and it is not to be confused with the low emotional energy of a depressed mind.

Blunted affect is a lack of affect more severe than restricted or constricted affect, but less severe than flat or flattened affect. "The difference between flat and blunted affect is in degree. A person with flat affect has no or nearly no emotional expression. He or she may not react at all to circumstances that usually evoke strong emotions in others. A person with blunted affect, on the other hand, has a significantly reduced intensity in emotional expression".
